Are You Being Kind To Yourself?

August Blog Post

I meet women every single day, who before stepping into my tanning tent, say sorry! “Sorry I’ve gained a few extra pounds since I last saw you, sorry about my big boobs, sorry about my stretch marks and my cellulite”

I completely understand that getting semi naked in front of someone, let alone if it’s the first time we have met, a complete stranger. It can feel like a daunting and vulnerable experience. I remember my first ever spray tan, feeling exactly like many of you do. I was nervous, embarrassed and felt completely out of my comfort zone. I’m sure many of you reading this can resonate with this.

But let me ask you a question, the things you say to yourself about your body, would you say that to your best friend? Would you look your best friend in the eye and mention her big boobs, would you mention her stretch marks or cellulite? For the point of this blog post and because you can’t physically answer me as I type this, I’m going to assume the answer to that question is no. Of course you wouldn’t! We live in a world where we build women up, right? So if the answer is no, why do you feel it’s ok to talk to yourself like that?

Why don’t we build ourselves up? Instead of looking in the mirror thinking about all “the bits” we don’t like, why don’t we think about all the bits we do like? Is it because we are British and can’t take compliments well? Who knows, but hand on heart ladies, all I see when I tan you, is where I can create my magic! For me, there is no better feeling than seeing someone step out of my tent, looking down at their tan line and say wow, that’s amazing! I feel amazing! I love giving you that confidence to wear your new skirt, or helping you feel beach ready!

You are not being judged in any way, you will be made to feel at ease and as comfortable as possible. But most of all I want you to feel the most beautiful version of yourself and own it!

Maybe the next time you aren’t being kind to yourself, replace it with something, no matter how small that you like or even love about yourself!

Until next time, throw kindness around like it’s confetti, but start with yourself first!

How To Look After Your Skin This Summer

Be Beautiful Hair & Beauty Blog Post Image

Summer getaways are just around the corner. We all love a holiday and that feeling of heading to the airport early, getting those last minute essentials before two weeks of sun and relaxation! We can’t wait to get on that beach, get “the tan” and show off our golden glow as soon as we get back, but at what cost?

Recently, I took an accredited course with Skcin UK, an amazing charity that helps raise awareness of skin cancer within the UK. As a Spray Tan Therapist, I see skin on a daily basis and so wanted to learn more about what to look out for as early detection of skin cancer can make a huge difference…

The statistics below were provided by Cancer Research UK in 2018 and are frightening to say the least…

  • Skin cancer is the most common and fastest rising cancers in the UK.
  • Over the last 25 years, rates of melanoma in Britain have risen faster, killing more people than in the sunshine capital of the world, Australia.
  • There are over 2,400 deaths from melanoma each year
  • Sunbed users and active tan seekers are at greater risk. Using a sunbed just once a month can increase a persons risk of developing skin cancer by more than 50% and regular sunbed users under the age of 35 increases a persons risk by an alarming 87%
  • It’s a common misconception that using a sunbed will prepare or protect the skin against burning before going on holiday – it won’t. It just increases damage and risk, along with premature ageing, wrinkling and sagging of the skin.
  • A massive 86% of melanoma cases are actually preventable!

With stats like that, I wanted to share with you 5 steps you can take to stay safe in the sun this Summer…

1

SLIP on clothing, this can be one of the most effective barriers between our skin and the sun. Make sure shoulders are protected as they can burn easily.

2

SLOP on SPF 30+ Sunscreen, make sure it carries a UVA symbol and apply generously at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.

3

SLAP on a wide brimmed hat to shield face, neck and ears.

4

SLIDE on the shades and go for high quality protection, look for the european CE mark which indicates a safe level of protection.

5

SHADE from the sun where possible, particularly between the hours of 11am-3pm when the sun is at its hottest.

By following these steps above, you’ll be doing all you can to take care of your skin. The safest way you can tan is either a professional spray tan or self tanning. It will give you that golden glow you crave, it will give you the confidence to hit the beach from the very start of your holiday, the only thing it won’t give you is skin cancer!

If you take nothing else away from this blog post, please do one thing for me, check your moles and if you notice even the slightest change, whether that’s in size, shape, colour, becoming itchy or raised, please go and see your GP. It might just save your life!

Until next time, enjoy your holiday and look after your skin this Summer!

Do You Have A Question About Tanning?

June Blog Post Image

Tanning can feel like a daunting experience, whether that’s booking a professional spray tan or tanning yourself at home. Therefore, this month I wanted to share with you some of the most frequently asked questions I get and give you the facts so that you can feel the most beautiful version of yourself…

Q: I have fair skin and have never tanned before, what would be a good product for me to try at home to see if I like it?

A: I would always recommend using the Sienna X Gradual Self Tan first of all. It’s like a moisturiser, so has no guide colour to it, but it’s a really great product to use as you can gradually build up the colour to your desired shade. The Sienna X Sleep Drops are also a really nice way to add a little colour to your face too! You would just apply 1-2 drops to your night cream or serum and then rub all over the face and blend into the neck area.

Q: I’m really worried that if I have a spray tan, I’ll be Orange! Can you give me any advice?

A: Spray tanning often gets a bad reputation for looking Orange and smelling of biscuits! Sienna X formulations are packed full of natural ingredients to ensure you not only look beautiful in a natural glow, but you smell good too. During a consultation, you should be asked about your skin, how well you tan naturally in the sun and what your tan is for. This then helps your therapist advise you on the perfect solution for you. Spray tans are only ever orange, if the wrong shade is applied, or if the application has been done incorrectly.

Q: What can I use at home to avoid those tell-tale signs of tanning?

A: I would always recommend Sienna X Secret Tan Primer. This helps to stop the tan being too heavily absorbed into dryer areas such as, elbows, knees, hands and feet. You would just apply and then be able to use your favourite Sienna X self tanning product over the top.

Q: Can I still get a spray tan whilst I’m pregnant?

A: I would always recommend after the first trimester (12 weeks) hormones have settled down and a spray tan would be perfectly fine to have done. It is the safest form of tanning you can have.

Q: Are Sienna X products vegan friendly?

A: Yes. All of the products within the range are all vegan friendly, cruelty free and paraben free too. If you are an extreme vegan, the only product that wouldn’t be suitable for you is the moisturiser; Radiance Body Balm as this contains a small percentage of Lanolin.

Q: Can I have a spray tan before going on holiday?

A: Absolutely you can! There’s no better feeling that glowing with confidence from the start of your holiday. You would still need to apply your SPF as the spray tan solution doesn’t contain it, but it does allow you to build up a natural tan over the top.

I hope you have found this helpful. If you have any other questions about spray tanning or self tanning, please feel free to get in touch by leaving a comment below or alternatively, you can pop over to my Facebook page.

Until next time, glow with confidence…
