You may have heard about Retinol, but what is it and why should you incorporate it into your skincare routine? Retinol is a type of Retinoid which is made from Vitamin A. Its job is to stimulate Collagen production. With ongoing use, it helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, creating a smoother, more even complexion.

Collagen gives our skin its elasticity and plumpness and as we hit our thirties, our collagen production starts to decrease. Our skin gets thinner and as a result, fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. This is where The Retinol Serum can help. However, there are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to incorporating it within your skincare routine…

Why should I only use The Retinol Serum at night?

This is because Retinol can increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, therefore should always be applied during your evening skincare routine, followed by an SPF30 + the next day.

Why is it important to start of using The Retinol Serum gradually?

You will need to build up your skin’s tolerance to Retinol. Therefore you should begin using it 1-2 times a week to start with and then gradually increase to daily use as your skin adjusts. For first time users, I would always recommend a patch test before using.

When should I use it and how much should I use?

You would apply this during your evening skincare routine. After you have cleansed and toned your face, you would apply your Retinol. The Retinol Serum is highly concentrated and therefore less is most definitely more. Only 2-3 drops are needed as it goes a long way. What else do I need to know about The Retinol Serum?

You should avoid using The Retinol Serum if you on any other retinoid treatments and if you are pregnant, this is due to hormonal changes that can effect the skin.

We all know that sleep is a key ingredient for making us feel alert and energised, but can it really help give us beautiful skin too?

As we snooze, our skin gets to work to repair itself and studies suggest that new skin cells grow faster when we are asleep. It’s also the time that our skin produces collagen which helps to plump it up, leading to firmer, smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. Research also suggests that the blood flow to our face is also increased as we sleep, which helps to give our complexion a healthier appearance when we wake.

Have you ever wondered why many skincare companies offer specific nighttime serums, oils and masks? These products are specifically designed to aid our skin during the night. By having a good nighttime routine, this not only helps to relax your busy mind before bed, it also helps you get the most from the products themselves.

So what is it a good night-time routine? I would recommend using a good quality cleanser Toner and Moisturiser. I would always double cleanse and for me personally, I love the The Skincare Collection from Sienna X. The Cleansing Balm helps to remove the negative traces left behind from pollution too.
